STEP-BY-STEP HOW TO WASH SASH HUMAN HAIR EXTENSIONS

How To Wash Hair Extensions – A Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1: Detangle The Extensions

This is the first and most important step before you start washing the hair extensions. Brushing gently helps clear all the knots and detangle the extensions. Brush the extensions from bottom to top without pulling the hair out.

Use a wide-toothed comb or soft bristle brush while working on extensions. Take a single weft and place them over each other to form a bundle. This ensures that the hair does not form tangles during the washing process.

Step 2: Prepare The Sink

Fill the sink with lukewarm water, squirt about 2-3 pumps of organic shampoo, and create bubbles. To keep the shine and luster of the hair extensions intact, use a color-safe shampoo that does not contain parabens, sulfates, and alcohol.

Step 3: Wash Every Hair Weave

Wash 2-3 wefts of the hair extensions at a time with a moisturizing shampoo. Hold the top of the weft in one hand, dip it into lukewarm water, and wash gently with light strokes. Do not rub them vigorously as it may damage the texture.

Gentle washing is essential to maintain the shine and texture. Place each weft on a neat towel after washing and repeat the process for the rest of the wefts.

Step 4: Condition The Weft

A conditioner helps soften the extensions and restore their shine. Apply a dollop of natural conditioner onto each weft from top to bottom. Massage gently and leave it on for 5-10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water to remove all the residue.

Step 5: Apply Deep Conditioning Mask

Apply deep conditioning cream or hair mask to make the extensions soft and smooth and leave it on for an hour or overnight. Apply hair mask on damp extensions and follow it up with gentle and thorough rinsing after an hour. If you want to keep the hair mask overnight, bundle it softly and cover it with a shower cap. Rinse it thoroughly the next day for a super soft and supple texture

Step 6: Rinse Thoroughly

Rinsing in cool water is important after applying a hair mask. Any residue on the hair extensions makes them greasy and will weigh down your original hair. Washing in cold water seals the cuticles, locks in moisture, and adds shine to the hair extensions. Wash each weft thoroughly under running tap water.

Step 7: Air Dry

Towel dry your extensions after rinsing the extensions to absorb the extra oil without damaging them. Do not rub the towel as it may damage the extensions and develop tangles. Place the wefts on a microfiber towel and let them air dry naturally. If you want frizz- and tangle-free wefts, apply a lightweight hair oil with your fingers and comb with a wide-toothed brush.

Step 8: Blow Dry

Before blow drying your hair extensions, apply a heat-protectant spray. Use the blow dryer on a cool setting to prevent any heat damage. Start by drying the roots of the wefts and follow to the ends. Use the blow dryer in a downward motion to smoothen the extensions and prevent tangles.

Drying

We don’t recommend blow-drying your extensions after every wash as doing this constantly will make them dry and more vulnerable to breakage. If you must blow-dry your extensions, be sure to use a heat protectant spray prior to blow-drying to extend the lifespan of your hair extensions. If you need to use your extensions immediately after washing them, the most important thing is to ensure that you are blow drying on a cool setting to prevent any heat damage and that you don’t brush the hair until it is 90% dry.

Whether you're new to Hair Extensions or have used them in the past, care tips are important in order to prolong the lifespan of your extensions. A good care routine of your hair extensions from the start is a great habit that should be built from the moment you receive your extensions.

Read on to learn all about hair extensions care, tips and, tricks to ensure your set are well cared for. While we talk mostly about clip-in extensions, the information is applicable for most types of high-quality Remy hair extensions.

With regular care and attention, you can ensure your hair extensions last as long as possible and stay looking healthy. Let's find out how!!

Washing your Extensions FAQ

When washing your extensions, it's important you hydrate them as much as possible. Since hair extensions don't receive the natural nutrients and oils like our own hair does, it's important to ensure that your set is always nourished and moisturized by using alcohol and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners.

Q: How often should I wash my clip-in hair extensions?

A: The less you wash your hair extensions, the longer they will last you. We recommend to wash your hair extensions every 15-20 wears or so, depending on how much product you use on them. Remember, since the hair extensions aren’t actually attached to your scalp, they don’t get oily like your natural hair and therefore don’t need to be washed as often. The only reason you need to wash your hair extensions is to get rid of excess product buildup, or if you’ve worn your hair extensions about 15-20 times and they need some refreshing.

Q: Do I need to wash my SashHair extensions before I wear them?

A: No, SashHair extensions are ready to wear straight out of the box! You do not need to wash them before wearing. Hair extensions are a hygienic product and therefore is completely safe to wear right out of the box.

Q: What products should I use on my clip-in SashHair extensions?

A: We highly recommend to use natural, and organic hair products if possible. Make sure the hair products are sulfate free, alcohol free, and are designed for color treated hair or hair extensions. This will ensure that your hair extensions have a longer lifespan.

Q: Do I need to wash my clip-in hair extensions after curling to make them straight again?

A: It’s an option, but again, unless the hair has lots of hairspray and other product buildup, we wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, you can gently brush the curls and the product out with a soft bristle brush from bottom to top, use heat protectant, and use a hair straightener on a low to medium heat setting to straighten the set. Sash Hair extensions are real Remy human hair, therefore, can be washed and styled just like your own hair.

Q: Do these hair extensions dry straight?

A: SashHair extensions are of Asian origin, therefore, should dry straight. Be sure to brush the extensions straight before air-drying overnight. Some sets could be potentially dry with some beach waves, however, as mentioned earlier, can be styled with hot styling tools to achieve any desired look. Just be sure to always use heat protectant and your heat styling tools on a low to medium setting.

Q: Do we need to wash the actual clips/wefts?

A: This is a personal preference. If you feel the tops of the tracks and clips need to be washed as well, you can definitely dunk the entire set under the water and wash the same way. If the main reason for washing is to refresh the hair itself and get rid of product buildup, not washing the tops of the wefts is simply a personal choice. This will also help the hair extensions air-dry faster. You can clean the clips separately with a Q-Tip.

How long do hair extensions last?

The lifespan of our sash extensions can range anywhere between 3 to 9 months to a year or longer, depending on the general care they receive and how often they are worn. Remember, the more you wash and heat style your extensions, the shorter their lifespan will be, so try to keep washing and using products on your extensions to a minimum. The important thing to remember is that your hair extensions don’t have a natural hydration source like your own hair does, so keeping them moisturized and reducing dryness is crucial to prolonging their lifespan.

Storing Hair Extensions

It takes only a few minutes to put away your Sashy Hair extensions, and those few minutes can make all the difference to the quality and lifespan of your extensions. After removing your clip-in hair extensions, ensure that all of the clips are closed shut. When prepping your extensions for storage, we always recommend Brushing them well first. Always make sure you store your extensions in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight (like a closet, cabinet or dresser drawer). Also, ensure your extensions are completely dry when storing them to prevent mold and other bacteria from growing.

Keep them Hanging or worn to ensure continuous aeration.

Our sashy carriers are perfect for storage as they keep them styled and tangle free at all times

Brushing Through Your Extensions

Make sure that you are always gentle with your extensions and that you brush them properly as this can also affect their lifespan. First, gather all the hair together by stacking all of the wefts on top of one another. Then, carefully brush out the extensions from the bottom of the hair slowly working upwards towards the root. If you come across a particularly pesky knot, take out the individual weft and brush it through gently. Never brush the extensions when they are wet as this is when it is the most susceptible to breakage. Instead, brush them once they are 90% dry.

For brushing, we recommend using the  Professional Loop Brush. Alternatively, you can also use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush with soft bristle. The Loop Hair Extensions Brush is designed specifically for the use on all different types of hair extensions, as it has unique nylon “looped” bristles which easily glide through the hair and remove any tangles. It won’t cause pulling, snagging, or damage to your wefts, which you may otherwise experience with a regular hairbrush.

 Preventing Tangling

While Sash Hair extensions are made of 100% Remy Human Hair, matting and tangling is a normal occurrence with not just your natural hair but will all types of hair extensions. This can happen due to a lack of constant brushing, weather, or dryness. A common reason why extensions tangle and get matted throughout the day is because of a combination of sweat, heat, and friction. Also, keep in mind that when human hair is constantly moving around it mattes or ‘clumps’ together in pieces and should be brushed consistently to avoid this. During the day, we generate heat at the back area of our nape and scalp, and often times we sweat back there too. Your sweat is salty and acidic which can dry out your hair extensions. When you add additional hair volume to this combination and constantly move your head throughout the day, tangling and matting will occur
